If you want to learn digital marketing on your own, it can be challenging. But I’m going to show you several tips that worked on me when I started to study the fundamentals of digital marketing several years ago.

I’m a graduate of BS Computer Science, and we were never taught how to do digital marketing in class. When I decided to make digital marketing my new career, it was a conscious decision that was not easy. 

The internet has become my primary mentor. It was Google that led me to some of the best online resources in digital marketing. In this article, you’ll also learn how I did it. Of course, you can do it, too!

Be Updates with News

Let me break the ice: digital marketing is a constantly evolving field. There are new technologies and platforms that we have to be familiar with every day. However, the fundamentals of marketing are here to stay.

One of the things that I still continuously do is be updated with the news. I follow several websites that talk about digital marketing and social media marketing to keep me updated with what’s new to further help my clients.

There are awesome websites like Digital Marketer, Social Media Examiner, and Yoast SEO Academy that inform us about the latest updates in different field of digital marketing. I started reading the articles on these websites, and I still continuously check their updates now and then. Bookmark them!

There are still more websites out there waiting for you. Google the topics you want to learn, and the best websites will likely appear on the first page. Check them out!

Watch Video Tutorials

If you’re a visual learner who understands topics easier when teaching you, consuming video content might be the way to go. YouTube has been the main platform for educational content because of its searchability. 

Most of the blogs about digital marketing have their own YouTube channels already. You can check their video content and stick to those you like to teach digital marketing, social media marketing, and SEO. 

Again, I’m a huge fan of Social Media Marketing videos, mostly when they talk about Facebook ads for e-commerce websites. 

Enroll in Online Courses

If you want to be in a class with guided lessons, enrolling in an online course might work for you. Some may provide certificates, but you don’t have to pay for these courses all the time! 

There are currently free digital marketing courses on Google, Facebook, and Yoast Academy that you can enroll in and take advantage of today. If you have some money to spend or your company is willing to sponsor your professional growth, Digital Marketer is a great option that I also took several years ago.

Learn by Experience 

People learn best when they’re already doing the job. I had also learned so much when I made several mistakes in some of the projects and companies that I’ve worked with back in the days.

When we commit mistakes, it doesn’t mean the end of the world. This is the best way for us to learn and become a better version of ourselves.

Reading articles, watching videos, and enrolling in courses might teach us the fundamentals of digital marketing and how others made it work for them. But will it work for us? We’ll never know unless we try.

The best advice I can give to anyone interested to learn digital marketing today is to start your project and use the knowledge you learned from the resources you’ve consumed.
